    Black Lives Matter Week and Beyond: Rainier Beach High School Celebrates Black History Month

    Rainier Beach High School and our Black Student Union, led by Mr. Jerrell Davis, invite you to celebrate Black History Month with us! Below please find the schedule of activities that honor Black Lives Matter Week and celebrate Black History Month. Let's join together in the fight against violence and systemic racism towards all Black people.


    FEBRUARY 5 - 9, BLACK LIVES MATTER WEEK:

    Monday, February 5

    Focus of the Day: Restorative Justice; Homelessness
    Revolutionary of the Day: Assata Shakur
    Wear: All Black
    We will take an all-school Black Lives Matter Photo in the last 15 minutes of the school day (3:30 - 3:45 PM).

    Tuesday, February 6

    Focus of the Day: Global Blackness/Celebration of African Diaspora/Immigrant Acknowledgement
    Revolutionaries of the Day: Dikembe Mutombo, Muhammad Ali, Alison Felix
    Wear: Dashikis, African cultural garb, Blackness Celebration swag

    Wednesday, February 7

    Focus of the Day: Intersection of Black and LGBTQI
    Revolutionaries of the Day: Audre Lord, James Baldwin
    Wear: Black, solidarity colors

    Thursday, February 8

    Focus of the Day: The Black Family; Mass Incarceration; Violence Awareness
    Revolutionaries of the Day: Steve Biko, Ida B. Wells
    Wear: RIP gear for those who were killed due to violence; to recognize those lost and stand in solidarity with each other.

    Friday, February 9

    Focus of the Day: Celebration of Black Womxn and Womxnhood
    Revolutionaries of the Day: Shirley Chilsom, Hatshepsut, Vickie Williams
    Wear: Black Womxn celebratory garb.
    There will be a District-wide Black Lives Matter Rally at Cleveland High School. Speakers include Rainier Beach High School's own Miriam B., Zion T., Elijah L., Mr. Afam Ayika, and Ms. Chelsea Gallegos.

    Monday, February 12

    African American Parent Involvement Day

    Agenda:

    9:00

    Breakfast with parents in Room 160. Breakfast will be prepared by Leadership students under the guidance of Mr. Jackson.

    9:30

    Introductions and Explanation of the Day.

    Parents will identify what they will look for as they visit classrooms. Parents will receive a note book and a pencil to take notes.

    9:50-10:35

    Classroom Visits (2nd period)

    10:45-11:30

    Debrief in the Library:

    • Q&A
    • Announcements and Information including all activities for the remainder of the year
    • Parents will learn how to become more involved
    • Parents will have the opportunity to provide feedback


    Tuesday, February 27

    An all-school Black History Month Assembly (during 2nd period -- please join us!)



    We will also have daily educational and community-building activities in classrooms and during lunch time.
