    Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians:

Welcome to the 2020 Credit Retrieval Program at Rainier Beach High School! This year, we are offering virtual Summer School using APEX Learning online curriculum for credit recovery. Please read the information below carefully.

    Required Orientation

You have been assigned to the Credit Retrieval Program offered by Seattle Public Schools and hosted by Rainier Beach High School. We will have an online orientation using Microsoft Teams on Monday, July 6th at 1:00 PM.  All Rainier Beach High School Summer School participants should have received an email from Ms. Thomas with a link to attend the orientation. If you don’t have the link, please contact Ms. Thomas at althomas1@seattleschools.org as soon as possible.

Below are a few answers to popular student questions:

    1. You can only take credit retrieval if you have failed at least one course.  You cannot be in this program only to move ahead or take classes that you haven’t experienced before.  If you are enrolled in a course that you have not experienced, you will not earn credit for that class.  It will be for enrichment only.
    2. The program starts on Monday, July 6 at 1:00 PM.  Your course schedule will begin on Tuesday, July 7th at 9:00 AM.
    3. The program ends on August 7th.
    4. We are still offering free lunch at the school during the summer school program.
    5. The schedules are flexible, but expect to be in your online school Monday-Thursday, 9:00 AM-2:00 PM.
    6. Some of you guessed when it came to scheduling your courses.  This may cause you to be in the wrong course.  If you are not sure about your courses, we have summer school counselor, Ms. Tran, who can help you. Ms. Tran can be contacted at pltran@seattleschools.org .
    7. You can only take up to two courses this summer.
    8. We expect you to complete the courses entirely in order to earn credit.
    9. Parents and guardians are expected to supervise student progress along with the classroom teacher.  Normally, students would need to test for mastery in front of a school official.  Since we cannot come onto the campus, we are asking our parent partners to proctor tests and ensure academic honesty.
    10. If you are taking WA State History, you will complete the course using packets. The packets take up to two weeks to complete.  You will work directly with Mr. Adams and Ms. Moges to complete this course and receive a P for passing.  You will be contacted with information on where to pick up and return your packets.
    11. Once you complete the courses you’ve enrolled into, you are done with summer school and no longer need to attend the scheduled classes.  You are able to work at your own pace.
    12. If you fail to complete your classes in five weeks, you will receive an Incomplete for the course.

    Please sign up for REMIND

In order to have direct communication with Ms. Thomas, the Site Coordinator, you must sign up for REMIND.  This is the most effective way to communicate with Summer School leadership.  Your teachers will have students sign up for REMIND for each of their classes as well.  To sign up for REMIND, we recommend you download the app to your smart phone.  Please send a text to 81010 – text the following: @rbsummer20 (do not forget the “@” sign).  Then simply follow the prompts.  It takes about two minutes.

    Logging into APEX

You will log into APEX at www.apexvs.com using your student number and the password Summer2020.  Once you log in for the first time, you will customize your password.  Please make sure to remember your new password so that you are able to progress without delay.

The exception are students who have already taken APEX courses before and have an existing APEX account established at their school – these students will in most cases use their existing account to take summer classes. When in doubt, please contact Ms. Moges at sbmoges@seattleschools.org with any questions or to receive help signing in.

APEX is online and you do not need an app to work on the platform.

We look forward to working with you this summer!
