International Baccalaureate Newsletter

Welcome back to school!

Dear Rainier Beach Community,

We hope this newsletter finds you well as we dive into another exciting year of academic excellence and growth. Our Medallion and Diploma students have been diligently working on their college applications, with the support and guidance of their dedicated teachers in the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class. As the college application season picks up momentum for seniors, we want to remind our families that your questions and concerns are always welcome. Please feel free to reach out to Mr. Miller smmiller@seattleschools.org or Ms. Andii smsandman@seattleschools.org in Success City (room 265) if you have any college-related inquiries or need assistance with the application process. FAFSA does not open in October like previous years.  We will be hosting a FAFSA night in January.

Please read on for important announcements, updates, and events!

Thank you for being part of our IB community, and here’s to a year filled with learning, growth, and success.

Warm regards,
RBIB Co-Coordinators
Steven Miller and Grace Wedgwood

Updates on our IB Program

Exciting New Courses

We are thrilled to announce that we have begun our first official year of the Environmental Systems and Societies class. This course is designed to engage students in critical thinking about environmental issues and the impact of human activities on our planet. It aligns perfectly with our commitment to nurturing global citizens who are aware of their responsibility towards the environment.

IB Exam Registration

For our seniors, it’s important to note that IB exam registration is right around the corner. By November 15th, all seniors will be registered for their IB exams. As always, we are proud to emphasize that these exams are entirely free for our students. It is state law in Washington that a score of 4 or higher in an IB class earns college credit.  Students’ overall score is an average of their Internal Assessments (IAs) and their scores on exams.

Upcoming Events

For our 10th-grade families, we have an exciting event on the horizon. Mark your calendars for IB Pathways Night on December 7th. This event will provide valuable insights into the next steps of the IB journey, helping you make informed decisions about your student’s educational path.

Additionally, on October 12th, during Curriculum Night, we will have an IB survey available for our families. Your input is invaluable to us, and we want to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our students and their families. Please take a few moments to share your thoughts and suggestions with us.

We are truly excited about the academic year ahead and the opportunities it holds for our Rainier Beach IB students. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to our dedicated staff.
